September 6-9 Newsletter

Beaumont/Alameda Pre-K Newsletter

For the Week of September 6-9, 2011

Hello Pre-K families! Our first week of school was great.  We played name games, enjoyed Mir’s famous magic show, talked about and drew our favorite memories from our Summer Vacation, and enjoyed a little of the sunshine.  We talked about our three classroom rules: BE SAFE, BE A HELPER, AND BE A FRIEND.  We decorated our bags for the “Life in a Bag” project with markers, crayons, and colorful foam shapes.

Thanks and Reminders

*Thank you to all the families that signed up for snack.  There is a play dough sign-up sheet with directions for how to make it as well. Please take one.

*If you have not brought in a family photo please do. Thank you.

*As it is still summer, and we are going outside, please provide sunblock for your child.

* How we celebrate our birthdays here at school. Parents may set up a day with a teacher to come into the classroom and celebrate your child’s birthday.  You bring in a photo for each year of your child’s life. All his/her classmates will sit in a circle and the birthday child will walk around a sun holding the earth while singing a special song. The parents will briefly explain something special about their child for each year. This celebration typically lasts about 10minutes. However we do not celebrate by bringing in cupcakes, cake and etc. Thank you for your support and please speak with a teacher in regards to a day in advance for planning.

*Next week the students will start their own sign in by recognizing their name and photo and putting it in a basket.

* Our upcoming theme will be ALL ABOUT ME.

*Here is the sharing schedule that we will use for the year. When we start sharing please refer to this schedule. The teachers will inform you of when sharing will start.  The schedule is posted outside the classroom. When your child brings in sharing please do not bring any toys. Thank you for your support.

Life In a Bag

Our first theme of the year will be ALL ABOUT ME. We will kick this off with a project called “Life in a Bag.” Please assist your child in choosing three items that somehow represent them that can be placed in the bag. We have set up a schedule to insure that each child has a chance to share. This will be the sharing schedule for the year. Your child may bring their bag in on Monday, September 12th (even if it is not their sharing day, they may keep it in their cubby, or their specific sharing day that they have been assigned). Each child will have a chance to share their items during circle time. We will not force anyone to share but will encourage them with support. The bag may consist of hobbies; pictures of people, whatever it is your child wants to share about him or herself (Please no toys). Thank you for all or your support.

Explains: A child may bring in a paintbrush because they like making art.  An apple because it is their favorite food. A picture of their pet/or trip they went on.

The Week in Review

Tuesday: Today we had a great first day off school. Books we read today were: If you Give a Pig a Pancake, Aaron and Gayla’s Alphabet Book, Spot Goes to School. During group we played the name game for all classmates to start learning each other names.  Mir put on a fabulous magic show for both morning and afternoon classes. The students were introduced to our three rules which are: Be Safe, Be Helper and Be a Friend.  In the science area we had a sink/ float experiment.

Wednesday: We started the day with the “Bumble Bee” song, reading “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly Said the Sloth,” and explaining/practicing doing a fire drill.  After coming back from outside, we did a Summer Memory project — they drew a picture or their favorite summer memory and we wrote down their words about that memory.  Later in the afternoon we did some stretching and free play in the gym, followed by a walk around the field, during which we pretended to be on a safari with the kids.

Thursday: Today in Pre-K we read the books Amelia Bedelia’s First Day of School, Noisy Nora and Green Eggs and Ham. During group today, we went over our class rules again and played the name game. Outside, we drew with sidewalk chalk and played freeze tag. Our special project today was to decorate name tags.

Friday: We started off our day by reading The Robot and the Bluebird. We then sang a new song called ten horses.  Our special project today was decorating our bags for “Life in a Bag.” We also sang Five Little Ducks.  Flubber was in the sensory table.  Outside, we played duck- duck- goose.
