October 3-7
Beaumont/Alameda Pre-K
Newsletter for the week of October 3-7, 2011
This week we studied community workers. We talked about all the different kinds of community workers there are; doctors, people in our school, police people, fire people, postal workers, librarians, farmers, etc. As a class, we took a “field trip” to both the cafeteria and the office to meet the community workers in our school! On the day we learned about postal workers, we made our own letter bags and had a classroom mailbox that the children were able to “send” letters in. We made bookmarks on the day that we talked about librarians. When we learned about fire people we made our own fire truck collages. We learned two new songs this week, the “Itchy” song and “The Green Grass Grows All Around.”We started learning the alphabet beginning with the letter ‘A’. The students brought in lots of great sharing! We played the “Who’s Missing?” game as well as the “What’s Missing?” game. At the end of the week, we planted our classroom garden. We are looking forward to seeing all our new plants grow!
*We also began a job chart this week. We will choose a new friend each day to be the line leader, calendar helper or weather helper. These will change daily so that every student will have a turn at least once every two weeks.

The Week in Review
Monday: Today in Pre-K we began learning about community workers. For a special trip, we took a walk to the middle school office and met the principal. We also began learning the alphabet today. The following children shared for the letter ‘A’: Leo shared an Astronaut costume. Kate shared letter that she made and the word Apple. Lola shared a picture of herself. Daphne shared a leaf. Davis shared an Airplane. Today we read That’s Our Custodian and Don’t Forget the Bacon. We offered the following choices today: counter blocks, stamps, and Play Doh. We also had the opportunity to paint a pumpkin for our classroom. Next week we will open it up and count the seeds!
Tuesday: Today we continued our study of different community workers. This morning, we got to take a special tour of the middle school cafeteria! Denise and Joanna showed us the kitchen, and explained all the exciting things they do to prepare Beaumont’s hot lunch. We also learned all about Postal Workers today. We made mail bags to carry our pretend letters in (complete with a stamp!), and dropped them in our classroom make-believe mail box. We read a book all about the folks that work for the US Postal Service called Mail Workers, and sang a fun song – “This is the Way We Mail the Letter.” We also had more of our letter ‘A’ sharing today: Gabriel shared Applejacks cereal, Henry shared an Avocado, Ella showed us some Art she made, and Margaret brought in a holiday Angel.
Wednesday: During group time the following students shared letter Aa items: Sasha shared a picture of an acorn. Dani shared an Art picture she made. Charlie shared an antler. Hudson shared a stuffed animal Ape. Deacon shared a live Ant. Gus shared an Apple cutter. It’s great to see what each student brings in. Books we read today were: Fire Bears, The Rescue Team, Dot the Fire Dog, Officer Buckle and Gloria and A Day with the Firefighters. We sang the song Ten Horses and also learned a new song called “Itchy”. We played two games today one was Who is Missing? And the other is What is Missing? The students were shown five different kinds of foods and they closed their eyes and had to guess which food item was missing from the group. They all did a great job in both games. Our special project today was making fire engine collages.
Thursday: Students who shared letter Aa items today were: Tess shared an A book. Benton shared rocks called asteroid and amethyst. Chase shared an astronaut and airplane. Dominik shared an apple. Our special project today was making bookmarks. We also had a collaborative painting class project. We started a job chart today. Each student will either be the line leader, calendar helper or weather helper throughout the week. This way it gives every student a chance to have turn. Books we read today were: The Very Lonely Fire Fly and Millions of Cats.
Friday: Today we learned all about farmers! We talked about where our food comes from, and why farming is so important to our community. We did some planting of our own in our indoor Pre-K garden, and took turns planting sunflower seeds and beans. We’re so excited to see it grow! We also read a book about a very special tool used for farming called “The Big Red Tractor.” We a lot of fun singing a song this afternoon called “The Green Grass Grows All Around,” and read another book called “Harry the Dirty Dog.” Our last day of letter ‘A’ sharing was great. Quincy shared some delicious arugula, Beck shared his handy allen key, Lucy brought a crafty alligator that she made, Boone showed us his toy airplane, Maggie brought a tasty looking apple, and Gilbert shared an apple as well as an animal alphabet book.
