October 24-28
Beaumont/Alameda Pre-K
Newsletter for the week of October 24-28, 2011
This week we welcomed a new student into our class! Welcome to Pre-K Cannon! We also celebrated Gilbert’s 4th birthday this week…Happy Birthday Gilbert! We adventured into the world of Spiders this week. As a class, we transformed our “bat” cave into a spider cave and hung the spiders we made inside. We used our “spinnerets” to build a classroom sized spider web out of a ball of yarn and sang “Itsy Bitsy Tarantula” to our class Tarantula, Butterfly! She loved it! We read Eric Carle’s The Very Busy Spider and made spider collages to resemble the art in his story. To wrap up our week on spiders, we had a Super Special Spider Tea Party! We read Miss Spider’s Tea Party and made spider hats to wear. The teachers were brave and gave the children various sweets to construct their own sugary spooky spiders to eat! They had so much fun listening to “Monster Mash” and eating their art! We also have been teaching the students some fun dance moves. We ended the week with the “Macarena!”
The Person of the Week this week was Boone! Boone is five years old, weighs “6” pounds, and is 3’7” tall. Boone’s eyes are blue and his hair is white. Some of Boone’s favorite foods are marshmallows, chicken, strawberries and candy. His favorite color is white. When Boone grows up he wants to be a policeman. If Boone had three wishes he would wish to go to Candyland, go on a picnic, and go to a football field. Boone likes playing with his brother and going to his favorite field.

The Week in Review
Monday: Today we started off the day by picking our person of the week. Boone was chosen for person of the week. He will do the calendar, weather, and be the line leader all week. The teachers explained to the class that everyone will have a chance to be person of the week. For our special project each student made a picture and had their words dictated for why they like Boone. He will receive this at the end of the week and we will read what nice things the class had to say about him.
We greeted a new friend Cannon today. The students were very welcoming to him and it is great to have him in our class. Welcome to Pre-K Cannon! During group time the students were paired up and asked to examine a spider. They counted the legs and looked at how many body parts a spider has. We discovered that a spider has 8 legs and 2 body parts: a combined head and thorax and an abdomen. Spiders also have 8 eyes. We also learned that a spider is not an insect. Spiders do not have wings or antennae. The students were asked what spiders have in common with insects. They all had great answers. We read The Very Busy Spider, and Spiders. Teacher Katie was out sick today and teachers Mir, Lacey and Maeve were here helping.
Tuesday: Today in Pre-K we continued learning about spiders! For our special project today, we read The Very Busy Spider and made our own spider collages. For choice time today, some options offered were: wooden blocks, spider coloring sheets, and comb building blocks. During outside time today, we played “Man on Mars.”
The following children shared for the letter Dd: Lola shared a Diaper. Gabriel shared a picture of his Dad, Ethan. Coco shared a Dog pencil sharpener. Henry shared a stuffed Dog named Spotty. Cannon shared a Dolphin and a Duck. Margaret shared a Dog. This afternoon we read the book Ms. Rumphius.
Wednesday: Today was another fun spider-filled adventure! We started the day by making our very own classroom spider web. We took turns passing a ball of yarn back and forth, each holding on to part of the string, until everyone was working together to form our web. We talked about how one spider builds a whole web all by itself, and that the part of the spider the silk comes out of is called a “spinneret.” We learned some more facts from our Smithsonian book “Spiders,” and we also read a fun spin on an old tale, “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.”
Our letter ‘D’ sharing today was fun: Hudson brought in his Doggie pillow pet, Charlie shared his Dad’s hockey jersey, and also a thousand Dollar bill, Dani showed us a beautiful Dahlia from her garden, Deacon brought a spider that he found in his backyard, and Jack showed us his real one Dollar bill.
Thursday: Today we started off our day by singing “10 spiders came crawling into town.” We then read The Itsy Bitsy Spider. We took a spider that has removable legs to show different ways in which to make eight. The students did a great job at counting and recognizing how many legs were on each side and how many there are total. We celebrated Gilbert’s 4th birthday today in the afternoon. Happy Birthday Gilbert! Our special project was to make a spider hat for our special Tea Party tomorrow. The project was a choice but we encouraged all the students to make one. Students who shared today were: Benton who shared several dinosaurs. Tess shared a Dolphin. Dominik shared a Dinosaur. Chase shared a book called How do Dinosaurs clean their room? And we read the book during lunch time. He also shared a card with a Deer on it. Simone shared some Dollar bills and a Dog. Vincent shared a Dinosaur.
Friday: Today was a big day in Pre-K! We began our day by reading Boone’s Person of the Week book. Our friends had lots of nice things to say about Boone! Following this, we read Miss Spider’s Tea Party and had our very own spider tea party! We wore the spider hats that we made yesterday and created our own sugary spiders out of various sweets! Outside, we played “spiders” and in the gym we played with the parachute. This afternoon, Teacher Shelley taught the students the Macarena!
The following students shared today: Boone brought a Deer. Beck brought Driftwood. Lucy brought a Dandelion. Quincy shared a leaf from a Dogwood tree. Maggie shared a Diaper that she uses for her Dolls. We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
