November 7-9

Beaumont/Alameda Pre-K

Newsletter for the week of November 7-9, 2011

This week we learned all about health! On Monday we discussed how germs are spread. To illustrate this, the teachers put sparkles on their hands and shook hands with the students. Once everyone was all “germy” we went to the bathroom and washed our hands. The children were really able to see why it is so important to wash our hands. In addition to this, we learned about the food pyramid, and why it means to eat balanced, healthy meals. The students had fun creating their own healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner with cut out foods. To end the week, we did a fitness “challenge,” where the students were able to test their bodies by running in place, doing jumping jacks, bouncing balls and keeping balloons in the air. We continued working with the students on pattern recognition this week. The teachers drew a series of patterns on the chalkboard and the students completed the patterns, which progressively got more difficult. This was exciting for both the students and the teachers to see how much we are learning!  The highlight of our short week was attending the potluck mixer. It was so nice to be able to visit with all of the families, thank you to everyone who was able to attend!

Thanks and Reminders

*Thank you to Dominik and his family for providing snack this week

*Thank you to everyone who brought items and helped out at the potluck on Wednesday! It was a great success! We will have an evening mixer soon so that all the families who couldn’t make it will have a chance to get together with everyone as well.

*Please remember to wash your students’ sheet and return them every Monday.

*We are always happy to receive input from families. Please feel free to e-mail your comments, questions, or suggestions to Mir at alamedaprek@gmail.com

The Week in Review

Monday: Today in Pre-K we began our unit on health. We talked with the students about germs and how germs are spread. Then we talked about preventing the spread of germs and the importance of washing our hands. To illustrate our point, the teachers dipped their hands in sparkles aka “germs.” We went around a circle, shaking the student’s hands, spreading the germs. The students were able to see how easy it is to spread germs! Then, we all washed our hands and the germ-sparkles were gone. Our special project today was painting with toothbrushes and sponges! It was fun for us to use these “cleaning” supplies in a new way! We also began learning about the letter ‘Ff’ this week. The following students shared for ‘F’ today: Cannon shared a Fish and Flowers. Lola shared a Fish. Kate shared the words Flower, Fly and Finger. Leo shared a Fire hat. Daphne shared a Flower. Davis shared pictures of a Flashlight, Food, Fish, Fire truck and Feet. In the gym today we played with the noodles! We read the books Why Do I Wash My Hands? And I Need A Lunchbox.

Tuesday: Today was super fun!  We continued our focus on Health, and talked about healthy food choices.  We learned about and took a look at the Food Pyramid, and read the book The Edible Pyramid.  We also read Good Enough to Eat, a book about why it is important to eat healthy foods.  Our special project today designing a healthful meal; we used scissors and pasted pictures of delicious foods on a plate for a meal of our choosing (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), and used crayons to decorate our meal.

We had lots of sharing today. Gus brought in his adorable Frog. Henry shared some beautiful Fabric he had painted. Margaret brought in shared her Fairy wings. Deacon brought in a picture of himself petting a pig on a Farm. Dani shared a Fish. Coco showed us some stickers she got from the eye doctor. Tess shared a very cool Frog that makes a real frog noise. Cannon showed us the Fish picture he had colored. Gabe brought in a very cool pocket-sized rocket ship game, and Ella shared some beautiful Flowers she had picked at her house.

Wednesday: We started our day off by having our Pre-k potluck. It was great for all of the families to interact with one another and for some of the morning and afternoon students to meet one another if they haven’t already. Thank you again for all your support in providing food, beverages and etc. We read a book all about Physical Activity and how it is important to exercise. The students came up with ways that they like to exercise their bodies such as: running, hula hooping, playing duck duck goose, red light green light, riding their bikes, gymnastics, ballet, soccer, and basketball.  We then had our physical challenge in the gym where they rotated bouncing balls, doing jumping jacks, running in place, and keeping a balloon up in the air. They each received an award for their hard work. Beckett shared his Foot, Maggie shared Flowers. We came up with words that begin with the letter F such as fun, fighter jet, farm, fly, fire engine, frog, fish, fog, and firefly.

Have a great four day weekend!
