Week in Review

 Notes and Reminders

  • Thanks to Dylan J.’s family for the delicious snack this week!
  • The next Person of the Week will be Penelope
  • The next letter of the week will be Yy
  • Beaumont had an earthquake drill on Wednesday. Pre-K did an amazing job taking cover under tables and making ‘egg’ shapes with their bodies. Prompted by lots of student questions, we spent most of group time talking about earthquake safety. We focused our discussion on earthquake safety at school but students seemed very interested in creating earthquake safety plans for their home 🙂

Monday: In Morning Meeting we introduced Miles as our Person of the Week and the letter Xx as the next letter of our Alphabet Study. We continued counting down to the last day of school with our Hundreds Chart. This week we began our Insect unit! We spent the day focusing on butterflies and their life cycles. In small groups, we discussed the different stages of a butterfly’s life: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. We learned more about the lifecycle from reading Born to Be a Butterfly and from Egg to Butterfly.  For our special project, we practiced our fine motor skills by writing and illustrating the life cycle of a butterfly.

Tuesday: Today students continued their work on their life cycles of a butterfly. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We enjoyed the brief patches of sunshine during our outside time and talked about how this is typical spring-like weather. We also had an optional project of making rainbows. Students ordered and glued paper strips onto a white cut-out cloud that they could add cotton balls to.

Wednesday: Today we focused our insect study on beetles! We read The Very Clumsy Click Beetle by Eric Carle.  For our project today we started to make our click beetle with actual clickers on the back.  We also received a very special shipment of Painted Lady caterpillars for our classroom! We will watch them transition from caterpillars to chrysalises to butterflies, and then we will release them! We have set up an observation station in the back of the classroom so come check them out!

Thursday: We continued to talk about insects and in our small groups we read Clara Caterpillar by Pamela Edwards. For our project, we revisited The Very Hungry Caterpillar and started a multi-step caterpillar on a painted paper leaf project. We attempted to imitate the style of Eric Carle by making painted paper and using the back of our paint brushes to draw and scratch into the wet paint to add texture and depth.

Friday: We read another book by Eric Carle in our small groups today called The Very Grouchy Ladybug. We talked about what makes a bug an insect, and looked at a variety of books and noticed the distinct characteristics of insects. Students continued their Very Hungry Caterpillar project, and started making their paper chain caterpillar. These will be finished early next week. We also checked on our pea sprouts and watered them this week. They are growing and we will be sending them home soon.

Gym Time with Teacher Mike:

This week in the gym was a blast. We played Spring Tag, Band aid Tag, Bouncing Relay races, Night at the Museum, Mr. Butterfly and more. I am really looking forward to all our dinosaur games coming up in the following weeks. A gym full of raptors is always a big hit.
